Wordplay - A Workshop
3 - 5 Juni 2006
Vocal music of the Renaissance for singers and instrumentalists
Through out the Renaissance, instrumentalists borrowed repertoire from singers, playing in consort (with or without voices) or re-working vocal originals into elaborately decorated solos. The workshop will study the consort repertoire derived from vocal works from a time where "the words were the soul, and music the body". Aimed at singers, recorder players, violists, lutenists. Other soft instruments by agreement. Good consort playing standard required. Repertoire ideas: Josquin: "Missa Malheur Me bat", Senfl: "Ecce quam bonum" à 4.
Undervisere: Philip Thorby & Jacob Heringmann. Kurset foregår på engelsk.

Tallis Scholars Summer School
15 - 22 July 2006
Oakham School, Rutland
Do you have a passion for Renaissance music? Why not join Peter Phillips and members of the Tallis Scholars for a week of complete indulgence in some of the most beautiful music ever written. Activities include choral rehearsals with Peter Phillips, sung services (Evensong, Compline), individual vocal tuition, talks and workshops, morning vocal clinics, field trips and a Gala Concert by TSSS participants, directed by Peter Phillips. TSSS is dedicated to exploring our great heritage of renaissance choral music, and to developing a performance style appropriate to it, as pioneered by The Tallis Scholars. The course is open to singers aged 16 years and over, and we welcome participants from across the globe.
We work on concert and service repertoire in a myriad of small and medium sized groups - there are opportunities to set up your own groups, and to get together to try out new repertoire from the library. Small groups perform to each other in an informal concert, and some go on to sing in the Gala Concert. TSSS is an intensive singing experience - and enormous fun too.

Lacock Summer School
WEEK I: 16 - 21 July 2006
Giovanni Rovetta (1596-1668) ~ Solemn Vespers for the Birth of Louis XIV (1639)
In 1638 the birth Louis XIV, the future 'Sun King', was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony throughout Catholic Europe. In Venice, the task of providing suitably uplifting musical offerings fell to Giovanni Rovetta. He had begun his career as a chorister in the basilica of San Marco, and by the 1630s he enjoyed considerable fame as a composer of beautiful and magnificent music; in 1644 he succeeded Monteverdi as maestro di cappella. The Doge and other princes who attended the 1638 ceremonies were enraptured by the 'wondrous harmony of the sweet songs'. Our performance (of a new edition by Lacock alumna Linda Maria Koldau) will attempt to re-create the splendour and opulence with Rovetta's sublime harmonies and virtuoso choral and instrumental writing: we welcome choral and solo singers, players of strings, cornets, sackbuts, curtals and all sorts of continuo instruments. Pitch: A440.

Lacock Summer School
WEEK II: 23 to 28 July 2006
Et lux perpetua: Six-part requiems of the Portuguese Golden Age by Duarte Lôbo (c1565-1646) and Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650), and Portuguese renaissance funerary motets.
David Allinson writes: 'I absolutely adore the Lôbo and Cardoso Requiems so austere, yet so rich. I performed them as a student and was captivated. They should make for an absolutely splendid week's music-making. Both Requiems compare favourably with the well-known setting by Victoria. The music is uplifting never grim, despite the subject-matter. The inclusion of music by previous generations of Portuguese composers Manuel Mendes, Filipe de Magalhães, Pedro de Escobar, Estevão de Brito, Pedro de Cristo will be illuminating for stylistic comparison; indeed, Escobar composed the earliest-known Iberian polyphonic Requiem, and his was the model for all subsequent settings. There is a real tradition here, of which Lôbo and Cardoso represent the culmination'.

Cazalla Singing Week II
12 - 19 August 2006
Singers of all ages are welcome at this week. The music will be from what Spaniards call El siglo de oro, that glorious and prosperous time that began with the re-conquest of Granada and the discoveries of Columbus, when Spain became the most powerful country in Europe and all its wealth from the New World flowed through the port of Seville. We will concentrate on music by composers connected with the city and its cathedral, who include Francisco de Peñalosa, Francisco de la Torre, Cristóbal de Morales, Pedro de Escobar, Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo. We will also sing a Magnificat by Domenico Scarlatti, who (as Domingo Escarlatti) lived most of his life in Iberia. The precise programme will be chosen when the size and composition of the group is known.
